China - China is poised to gain from the global shortage of laptop batteries, a new report said.

Research and Markets' "China Sourcing Report: Laptop Batteries" survey found that the fire at LG Chem, South Korea's second biggest battery maker, was forcing some of the world's leading technology companies to turn to China to fulfill their sourcing requirements.

Global sourcing, and specifically low-cost country sourcing, is continually a hot topic, as the need to gain competitive edge arise and companies tap into new emerging markets.

Some of the world's leading computer companies such as Hewlett Packard, Asus and Dell, have started increasing their laptop battery sourcing levels from China in recent months as Chinese suppliers have begun challenging established suppliers such as Sanyo, Sony and Panasonic.

The report however, warns that quality remains a primary concern, with the biggest battery recall in the history of consumer electronics in recent years placing a greater focus on battery safety by many companies within the PC Industry.
