IATA SENIOR APPOINTMENT AVIATION
Global - Alan Joyce, CEO and managing director of Qantas Airways, has been appointed chairman of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Board of Governors.
Joyce's immediate appointment will run for one year, as announced at IATA's 68th Annual General Meeting and World Air Transport Summit in Beijing earlier this week.
Succeeding Peter Hartman, president and CEO of Dutch airline KLM, Joyce will aim to be a strong advocate for the industry, maintaining IATA's top priorities of safety, security and sustainability.
"We need to ensure that governments understand what is at stake when they are making key decisions on taxes, regulation and capacity expansion," he said.
In his 24 years of experience in aviation, Joyce has held leadership positions at Qantas, Ansett, Aer Lingus and Jetstar and is the third Qantas CEO to serve as chairman.
Tony Tyler, director general and CEO of IATA, shared the Association's aim to develop the foundation standards for new distribution capability and to help manage aviation's 2% contribution to carbon emissions.
"I'm confident that Alan is the right person to lead IATA's Board of Governors as the Association strives to deliver even greater value to our members," he said.
