Singapore - DHL has its eye on the growing chemicals sector, and has in place a three-pronged strategy to boost its position in the local chemical market.

The company's focus on the chemical sector, which encompasses the chemical, petrochemical, polymer, biofuels, life sciences and pharmaceutical fields, is a timely one, as the market in Asia Pacific alone is estimated to be growing at 6% per annum. In 2008, the chemical market was valued at 1,644 billion euros.

In a step toward gaining a greater market share in the chemicals sector, DHL has appointed Dr David MJ Foo as the new director of business development for DHL Global Forwarding's chemicals business in the South Asia Pacific region.

Amadou Diallo, CEO of DHL Global Forwarding South Asia Pacific said: "The chemical industry has grown significantly over the years, with an increased demand for chemical solutions logistics. In a market that's already worth more than 3 billion euros in the Asia Pacific, customers are looking to their logistics provider for a one-stop solution and the chemicals sector presents key growth opportunities for DHL."

DHL said it will adopt a three-pronged strategy to enhance its position in the chemicals sector which will include building capabilities, be a leader within the global chemicals space and boosting its market share in the local chemicals segment.

Nick Revell, business development director for life sciences and chemicals at DHL said: "To capitalise on the growth potential, DHL's plans to strengthen our presence within this sector are already well underway. These include investing in resources such as chemical specialists and warehousing facilities to hold chemicals requiring more careful handling, investments which David will oversee and drive forward while also identifying potential areas for future growth.

"He will also focus on extending our relationships with major customers in the US and Europe to the South Asia Pacific region, especially to target markets like India, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand."

Foo brings to DHL a career in the chemical industry. Prior to his appointment, Foo served as a business unit manager of an international life science and high tech company which produced a large range of biochemicals, organic and inorganic chemicals and ither related products.
