Singapore - Singapore Aero Engine Services (SAESL) officially opened an extension to its maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facility yesterday.

The 12,000 sq m extension costs S$60 million (approximately US$42.5 million) and house all component repairs and logistics activities, enabling SAESL to supplement overhaul output by 25%, or up to 250 engines per year, the company said in a release. The original 18,000 sq m building will be left specifically for enhanced engine and module rework.

SAESL is the only facility in the world capable of servicing all in-service variants of the Rolls-Royce Trent engine, and is the lead facility for the Trent 900 engine that powers the Airbus A380.

"As an integral part of the Rolls-Royce's aftermarket services with the capability to support the full series of Trent Family engines globally, including the new Trent 900 engines that power the Airbus 380, SAESL is obviously a key player in Singapore's aerospace industry," said Lim Hwee Hwa, Second Minister for Finance and Transport.

The republic has one of the most established bases of MRO companies in the region for engine overhaul. SAESL accounted for one-fifth of Singapore's total aerospace output, reporting revenues of US$856 million in 2008, according to a ChannelNewsAsia report.

The expansion of SAESL's facility will significantly contribute to Singapore's value proposition as a MRO hub in the Asia Pacific, added Minister Lim.

"The support of the Singapore government, through the Economic Development Board, the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore and the Workforce Development Agency, has been key in promoting Singapore as the right place to expand our high value-added manufacturing activities in the aerospace sector," said Gary Nutter, CEO for SAESL.
