DHL pumps US$10m investment in VN

Vietnam - DHL said it will invest US$10 million in Vietnam over the next five years that will see the creation of a new DHL entity and the company's first SEA Fashion and Apparel Centre of Excellence opened there.

The agreement was signed with DHL's local partners including Oriental Logistics to form a new entity, DHL Global Forwarding (Vietnam) Corporation.

The investments will be channelled into the expansion of facilities, employee training, upgrading IT systems and introducing an enhanced range of services for businesses in Vietnam, the company said in a statement.

As part of the investment, DHL will launch a DHL Fashion and Apparel Centre for Excellence in Vietnam, its first in Southeast Asia, by the end of this year. The centre will comprise of a core team of industry experts and will be responsible for developing tailored solution and proving consultancy services.

"The fashion and apparel industry is one of the core focus areas for DHL Global Forwarding in Asia Pacific. This industry contributed nearly US$2.6 billion to Vietnam in the first four months of 2009 alone, with US$9.5 billion in exports projected for 2009," said Amadou Diallo, CEO of DHL Global Forwarding South Asia Pacific.

The sector is expected to grow at 5% for the year, in spite of the global slowdown, and has been valued at US$3.9 billion a year in South Asia and South East Asia, according to DHL estimates.
