Maersk ups rates
Global - Maersk Line will hike freight rates for its Europe-Asia, North America-Middle East/Indian sub-continent and North America-Mediterranean/North Africa trades beginning April 7.
In its Europe-Asia trade, Maersk said it would implement a commodity general rate increase of US$75 per FEU effective April 7. "The increase applies to all commodity-based cargoes in the eastbound Europe to Asia trade. The commodities will be waste paper, waste plastic, scrap metal, shredded tyres, rubber and paper pulp."
The North America to Middle East/Indian sub-continent trade will see fare hikes effective May 1 and August 15. The new fares will be:

- US$240 per 20ft dry container. Effective 1 May 2009
- US$300 / 40ft container/high cube. Effective 1 May 2009
- US$340 / 45ft container. Effective 1 May 2009
- US$120 per 20ft dry container. Effective 15 August 2009
- US$150 / 40ft standard container/high cube. Effective 15 August 2009
- US$170 / 45ft container. Effective 15 August 2009

- US$315 per 20ft dry container. Effective 1 May 2009
- US$390 / 40ft container/40' high cube. Effective 1 May 2009

- US$195 / 40ft standard container/high cube. Effective 15 August 2009

Maersk said the increases apply to dry cargo only, and do not apply to exempt commodities.
The company also said it will evaluate its rates to inland points to ensure they are fully cost recoverable. "In the future we will be quoting higher rates for cargo moving to and from inland locations."
